The Centre was established in 1977 by the Department of Science and Technology initially under the Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC) programme, with Indian Institute of Science, Raman Research Institute, National Aeronautical Laboratory all in Bangalore and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bombay as the participating institutions, and was called "Bangalore NMR Facility". It came under the purview of Regional Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre (RSIC) programme in April 1982 and was called the "Sophisticated Instruments Facility". In March 2005, it was renamed as "NMR Research Centre", which reflected the ongoing activities. After about a decade and half of active research in NMR, the NMR Research Centre was closed during the year 2021.

The broad objectives of the Centre were:
  • To carry out analysis of samples received from scientists and institutions.

  • To provide facilities to scientists to carry out measurements for the purpose of research.

  • To organise short-term courses/workshops on the use and application of various instruments and techniques for research students, teachers and personnel from other laboratories and industries.

  • To acquire and develop capability for preventive maintenance and repairs of Sophisticated instruments and also help other laboratories in this direction if and when possible.

  • To train technicians in maintenance and operation of Sophisticated Instruments.

  • To promote projects aimed at the development of new techniques, sophisticated instruments or improvement of existing instruments.

  • The NMR Research Centre (NRC) housed eight NMR spectrometers, ranging from 400 to 800 MHz. In accordance with the objective of the Centre, the facilities were made available to scientists from across the country. Schools/workshops were organised at the national level to make the users aware of the latest developments in the area of NMR spectroscopy and also to help them in making the best use of the available facilities. Generation of capability for maintenance / development / improvement of sophisticated instruments and providing assistance to other laboratories were also the objectives of the Centre.
